Episode Summary

Shoppers hit your 404 page when a URL is mistyped or when a product or collection has been deleted, so it matters for SEO and user experience. Shopify Analytics won't show you your 404s easily, but Google Search Console will — under Pages, look for "Not found (404)." Then create redirects in the Shopify admin under Content → Menus → URL Redirects. Shopify makes these 301 permanent redirects automatically, and pointing a dead product to its main collection beats dumping everyone on the homepage. Run this cleanup monthly.

For the 404s that still slip through, every theme has a 404 template you can edit in theme customization and add sections to. The episode compares bare-bones defaults (RugsUSA, Beardbrand, Gymshark) with better merchandised versions from Healing Home Foods, Chubbies, and Deathwish Coffee. The recommendation is one simple merchandising section — bestsellers or favorites — so visitors get context and can resume shopping. Don't over-invest: the real goal is that redirects keep anyone from seeing the page at all.
